| | Few companies consider there to be a need for a dedicated spill incident plan, and when questioned respond with vague references to their Disaster Recovery Plans. Any incident that is serious enough to impact on business as usual will impact on your ability to provide your normal business service. The author Mark East, BSc, has been involved in the Risk Management Industry since 1991. His first introduction to Business Continuity Management was a result of the destruction of his company, a plastics manufacturing business, by fire. As the Managing Director, he successfully steered the company through the aftermath of the incident and, learning from the results, decided to use those experiences to start Sapira, a Project Risk Management Consultancy in 1992. A science graduate of St Andrews University, his work with Boards of Directors developing their Crisis Management plans has taken him all over the world, he has lectured at major conferences in Turkey, Sydney, Johannesburg and Ireland.
Today he provides help and guidance to major corporations in Holistic Business Continuity Management, HBCM®. During this fifteen-year period the concepts and ideas behind the Sapira system have continued to develop and be refined. These include, within them, the creation of spill response procedures that are inevitably connected to crisis and incident management.
Mark’s concepts and theories are based on a common sense approach, pre planning and an acceptance that incidents occur in companies rarely. Incident teams will therefore be relatively inexperienced and lacking regular practice.
